November meeting recap - Modern Quilt Guild color challenge

At the November meeting, we shared the blocks we made using the colors found in the Modern Quilt Guild logo. Take a look at some of the wonderful submissions:

There are still a few more blocks coming in, and we plan to put them together to create our first official quilt, which will be ready for our booth at next year's Quilter's Day Out, March 15, 2014, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Fern Valley Hotel and Conference Center in Louisville.

We hope we'll see you there!

Learn paper piecing at our October meeting

Join us in October when our member, Cara, teaches us how to paper piece. It's a great way to achieve perfect points. Here are the details:

Date: CORRECTION - Sunday, Oct. 13

Time: noon - 4 p.m. (paper-piecing lesson begins at 1 p.m.)

Place: The Cozy Quilter, 12204 Shelbyville Rd., Middletown, KY, 502-742-2699.

Supplies:
  • Each person should choose and bring their own pattern (something with large pieces would be best)
  • Fabric for the block (a fat quarter of the background fabric should be the most you need other colors can come from scraps)
  • Add a 1/4-inch ruler (either 6-inch or 12-inch)
  • Insert from a magazine or small piece of card stock
  • Fabric glue stick

June 2013 meeting

We had lots of fun at our first official meeting, June 1, at Among Friends Quilt Shop. We gained five new members for the guild and spent some time showing off our quilts before enjoying each other's company and a little sewing.

Here are some of the beautiful quilts people brought:

To make sure we learn everyone's names and to help new members who join, our homework for the next meeting is to make a name badge for ourselves using any medium, but preferably done with quilting.

We also decided to hold regular meetings on the first Saturday of each month, so our next one will be July 7, tentatively scheduled from 2-5 p.m. at Among Friends, pending availability. Check back here closer to the date to be sure!

First meeting of the Louisville Modern Quilt Guild

We hope you'll join us for the first official meeting of the Louisville Modern Quilt Guild. Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, June 1

Time: 2-5 p.m.

Place: Among Friends Quilt Shop, 9537 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Ky., 502-261-7377

In addition to whatever project you'd like to work on that afternoon, we're asking everyone to bring an example of a modern quilt block they've made. We'll share with the group what inspired us to make the block, our fabric choices and how we plan to use it in a quilt.

If you don't have a block, but prefer to bring a work-in-progress or a finished quilt, that's fine, too - we'd love to see it!

We are an inclusive group, so even if you don't have a modern block but would like to learn more about this growing movement, please come and join the fun.

There will be refreshments, but we ask that you bring your own drink, which must be in a closed container. If you'd like more information, you can contact us at louisvillemqg@gmail.com.
